Diogo’s Journey: From Ruined Streets to a Relentless Fight for Survival

We first discovered Diogo scavenging inside a refuse bin — a sight that stopped us cold when he turned toward us. His face was marred by severe insect damage and other injuries, an immediate indicator of prolonged neglect and pain.

Concerned for his condition, we transported Diogo straight to a veterinary facility. Diagnostic X-rays uncovered two bullet fragments lodged in his hind limbs and another projectile that had pierced his cheek, a disturbing revelation of the violence he had endured. Laboratory analysis exposed a severe systemic infection and critically low hematocrit values. Additionally, his body was crawled with numerous ticks, heightening the suspicion of ehrlichiosis.

While awaiting the veterinarian’s full assessment, we performed a thorough bath to remove surface contaminants. The facial wound continually discharged a large volume of fluid, leaving wet residue across his fur and complicating wound care. The amount of necrotic tissue observed required frequent dressing changes and a surgical plan for debridement.

“Diogo arrived broken, but his will to survive was unmistakable; every intervention aimed to restore not only his health but his dignity.”

To stabilize him and create the conditions for effective cleaning and surgery, arranging a blood transfusion became urgent. Our veterinary team prioritized restoring circulatory stability before undertaking extensive wound management. Once stabilized, the plan included removing dead tissue, controlling infection, and monitoring for tick-borne diseases.

Diogo wounds

  • Findings: two gunshot wounds to the legs; one through the cheek
  • Complications: severe infection, very low hematocrit, heavy tick burden
  • Immediate care: bathing, wound dressing, planned transfusion and debridement

Following surgery, his face was notably swollen, yet the remaining eye remained intact — a small mercy in a grim clinical picture. His resilience has been remarkable; each day he has demonstrated incremental improvement thanks to round‑the‑clock nursing, antibiotics, and supportive care. The surgical team monitored wound healing closely and adjusted treatments as new information from cultures and bloodwork arrived.

Post-op Diogo

Important note: Diogo’s recovery hinges on continued medical oversight, attention to potential tick‑borne infections, and eventual rehabilitation to rebuild strength and trust.

He is still under intensive supervision, responding slowly but steadily to interventions. The transformation from a frightened, hungry stray to an animal capable of accepting care has been profound. We remain committed to his long‑term recovery and are cautiously optimistic about his prospects.

Diogo hopeful

As Diogo improves, our focus will shift to rehabilitation and socialization so he can eventually join a permanent, compassionate household. He deserves a calm environment, consistent nutrition, and the love that all survivors of trauma need to fully heal.

Conclusion: Diogo’s story is a testament to survival against brutal odds. Diagnostics revealed gunshot wounds, a severe infection, profound anemia, and a significant tick burden that required urgent intervention. Through surgical debridement, planned transfusion, and continuous veterinary attention, he has begun to recover. With sustained care and a loving adoptive home, Diogo’s future can be one of safety and affection. We continue to monitor his recovery and hope a kind-hearted family will offer the forever home he so richly deserves.
